about

When I was recording the skeleton tracks for the first IOTM release, which was December of 2014, it was evident that some tracks I recorded didn’t exactly “fit” that album. Two of the tracks on this release were recorded during that session, and after listening to them over and over, I set out to create a family for them, as I didn’t want to release them into the wild alone or be left on a hard drive somewhere never to see the light of day.

Most of these tunes are sparse and short. That’s kind of the point. I added guitar parts, programmed drums, and did tons of different mixes and all sorts of things to these eight tracks, but in the end, stripped them back and went with a simpler approach. I think they are happier and breathe better that way. I also used a variety of recording interfaces including Logic, Garageband, a Tascam cassette 4-track, a Lil’ Mib wooden box recorder, some interface for Windows I found online for free, and an Iphone. I did dump them all into Logic in the end, but it was fun using whatever was around, and kind of became part of the project itself.

Another thing that became a part of the project was self-reliance. I used to record myself all of the time, but over the years had gotten out of that habit and focused on just the creative aspect. With this recording I decided to try and do it all myself, by more of an accident than anything else. I originally planned to have some other collaborators, but when the timing didn’t work out, I still pushed forward and was happy with the results.

Thanks to Kevin Kimbrell for the feedback and support of the early versions, and to Paul Bodamer for the guidance and continued support in the recording process. I’ll dedicate this release to my three daughters, Margo, Judith, and Nima, who all fell asleep in the car by track 3 when I was spinning the final mixes a few weeks ago. As my goal for most of the IOTM releases, these tracks are best listened to with headphones, preferably surrounded by nature.

Hope you enjoy.
