about
On October 27, 2012 my friend Bentz Kirby experienced an event known as Sudden Cardiac Death Syndrome (SCDS or Sudden Cardiac Arrest). Through a series of fortunate happenings, including an off duty EMS technician carrying an AED, Bentz is still with us today.
One of his facebook posts after his surgery went something like "I've got 12 Staples in my chest/ a pacemaker that'll cook your microwave/ a phone in my heart that talks to my doctors/ and 5 minutes of my life gone forever." I basically took that, ran with it, and came up with this song. Whiskey Tango Revue was kind enough to back me on it, and I also conned Bentz and May to sing on it as well.
Proceeds from this track will go towards purchasing AEDs for locations around Columbia, SC, beginning with the Art Bar where a benefit concert will be held June 28, 2014.
lyrics
I’ve got 12 staples in my chest
A pacemaker, cooks better than your microwave
A phone in my heart, that talks to doctors
And 5 minutes of my life I won’t get back
And I can not remember
No matter how I try
With these 12 staples in my chest
I got a good woman by my side
She sees me through my trials and tribulations
She was there, with me the whole time
They put 12 staples in my chest
They hold me together
Protect my heart
These 12 staples in my chest
I have been through many crazy things
I have done, some crazy ones as well
And I’m so glad, to be kickin’ it here today
With these 12 staples in my chest
You can’t take it with you
No matter how you try
And I thank God for these staples in my chest
And I thank God for all these staples in my chest
