about
After having a great weekend planting trees in our yard, spending time with my wife and the kids and neighbors, and enjoying the fall weather, I woke up on Monday morning to the news of the Las Vegas shooting. My heart ached for the people and my emotions shifted from sad, to mad and back and forth. Later in the day I saw the news that Tom Petty was on life support with no brain activity and would probably be pronounced dead soon. I already had studio time planned and I decided to do a version of The Apartment Song.
My little brother's first CD was Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever, and we often listened to it growing up. That's where I first heard The Apartment Song. When I started playing some solo acoustic shows after college, one of the first covers I did in those early shows was The Apartment Song. It was easy, catchy, fun, didn't have a bridge, and I liked it. I usually did a pretty upbeat version like the Petty original. Last night the mood I wanted to capture wasn't upbeat.
